AFFIMER has supported Jochen Hemmleb's research on the history of Nanga Parbat, one of the most famous 8000 meter peaks. In 2004 Jochen mounted an expedition that visited all three sides of the mountain the Rupal, Diamir, and Raikot. For more information about the fascinating story of Nanga Parbat see below:
2002 Ellsworth Mountains, West Antarctica Expedition
We visited the Vinson Massif and the Patriot Hills to collect rock samples for a study a glacial geology (link to Claire Todd et al abstract). We also collected rocks for a reconnaissance study that uses DNA-polymerase technology to search for bacteria living inside stones. Such endolithic bacteria are widespread in warmer areas of Antarctica, and we hoped to find them on Mount Vinson.
